NANS UPDATE: REJECTION OF THE PURPORTED RESCHEDULING OF NANS JCC ZAMFARA AXIS CONVENTION AND ELECTION

i write on behalf of the Students' Union Government Presidential Forum and a stakeholder in the affairs of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Council (JCC), Zamfara State Axis, to register our strongest objection and total rejection of the purported "Notification of Rescheduled Convention" allegedly issued by the Chairman of the Independent Convention Planning Committee (ICPC).

The said notice is unconstitutional, procedurally defective, and a direct affront to the democratic will of accredited delegates who participated in the duly conducted NANS JCC Zamfara State Axis Convention held on 17th May, 2026 at Zamfara College of Arts and Science (ZACAS), Gusau.

For the avoidance of doubt, the Convention of 17th May, 2026 was successfully conducted in accordance with established procedures. Accredited SUG Presidents and delegates from tertiary institutions across Zamfara State participated in the convention and electoral process. At the conclusion of the exercise, results were officially declared, winners emerged, and a formal Communiqué was issued and circulated to stakeholders and the general public.

The Communiqué clearly confirmed the election of Comrd Basiru Umar Fata as Chairman and other elected officers of NANS JCC Zamfara State Axis. Consequently, the convention has been concluded, the mandate has been given, and the matter is settled.

It is therefore shocking that an individual who merely chaired the Convention Planning Committee now seeks to unilaterally reschedule an election that has already been conducted, concluded, and documented through an official Communiqué.

The ICPC was constituted solely to organize and conduct the convention. Upon the successful completion of that assignment, the committee automatically exhausted its mandate and became functus officio. It possesses no constitutional authority whatsoever to cancel, suspend, nullify, or reschedule a convention after results have been declared and accepted by Congress.

More disturbing is the fact that the purported notice was signed by only the Chairman of the committee without any evidence of approval by Congress, endorsement by accredited SUG Presidents, ratification by stakeholders, or reference to any constitutional provision empowering him to overturn the outcome of a completed election.

This action is not only illegal but also dangerous to the unity and stability of the students' movement in Zamfara State.

Beyond the constitutional violations, the timing of this illegality demonstrates an alarming disconnect from the realities confronting students across Nigeria.

While students and educational communities are mourning the growing wave of insecurity, some individuals are busy manufacturing constitutional crises for personal interests.

Recently, students of Federal Polytechnic, Kaura Namoda, Zamfara State, were abducted by bandits, creating fear and anxiety among students, parents, and the academic community. Similarly, in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, armed men invaded schools and abducted dozens of pupils and teachers, an incident that attracted national outrage and condemnation. Reports indicate that pupils and teachers were taken from multiple schools, forcing educational stakeholders to demand urgent action from government and security agencies.

In Borno State, suspected insurgents attacked schools in Askira-Uba Local Government Area, abducting dozens of school children from primary and junior secondary schools. Reports from international and local media indicated that many pupils were taken away during school hours, while several others remained missing after the attack. The incident once again highlighted the persistent threats facing students and educational institutions in Northern Nigeria.

At a time when students are demanding improved security, safer campuses, and stronger advocacy from student leaders, it is both insensitive and irresponsible to drag the students' movement into an unnecessary and unconstitutional repeat election that serves no legitimate purpose.

No responsible student leader should be encouraging gatherings capable of creating tension and confusion when educational institutions and students across the country are facing unprecedented security challenges.

Accordingly, I wish to state clearly that:

1. The NANS JCC Zamfara State Axis Convention held on 17th May, 2026 remains valid, lawful, and binding.

2. The election conducted during the convention remains valid and cannot be overturned by any individual acting outside constitutional procedures.

3. The Communiqué issued at the conclusion of the convention remains the authentic and official position of Congress.

4. The purported notice rescheduling another convention is null, void, unconstitutional, and of no effect whatsoever.

5. All SUG Presidents who's are delegates, stakeholders, and members of the students' community are advised to disregard the said notice completely.

6. Any attempt to conduct another election for positions already filled through a valid electoral process shall amount to a violation of democratic principles and an affront to the collective decision of Congress.

As student leaders, we must remain committed to constitutionalism, due process, democracy, and respect for the collective mandate freely given by students and their representatives.

No personal ambition, vested interest, or political manipulation should be allowed to override the will of Congress.

Long Live NANS!

Long Live JCC Zamfara State Axis!

Long Live the Nigerian Student!

Yours in the Struggle,

Comr. Salaudeen Sadiq Opeyemi

NANS JCC ZAMFARA AXIS, NANS ZONE A, SUG PRESIDENTIAL FORUM STORM DSS GUSAU OVER KIDNAP OF 6 STUDENTS IN KAURAN NAMODA

I, Comrd Basiru Umar Fata , Chairman, National Association of Nigeria Students, Joint Campus Council, Zamfara State Axis, today led a powerful delegation of student leaders on an advocacy and solidarity visit to the Office of the Department of State Services, DSS, Gusau Zonal Office.

This visit became necessary following the sad and unfortunate kidnap of 6 students of Federal Polytechnic Kauran Namoda at an off-campus residence in Kauran Namoda. The incident has thrown the entire student community and families into mourning, fear, and uncertainty.

1. Senior Special Assistant to the Special Assistant on Students Matters to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR Representing the Presidency at the students’ level.

2. Comr. Sir-Umar S. Doko Zonal Coordinator, National Association of Nigeria Students, NANS Zone A Northwest, alongside his Zonal Executive Council members.

3. Comr. Opeyemi Sadiq Salaudeen* – Chairman, SUG Presidential Forum, Zamfara Axis, with other SUG Presidents and stakeholders from across Zamfara tertiary institutions.

4. NANS JCC Zamfara Axis Executives, FAZAMSS representatives, and other concerned student stakeholders.

At the DSS office, we were received by top officers of the Service. In our address, we expressed the pain, anxiety, and frustration of students and parents whose children are currently in captivity. We made it clear that education cannot happen under fear, and that students deserve to learn in peace.

As the duly elected Chairman of NANS JCC Zamfara Axis, I made the following appeals to the DSS

1. We urge the Department of State Services to deploy its full intelligence and technical capacity to track, locate, and rescue our 6 kidnapped students who are currently in captivity.

2. We call for increased surveillance and intelligence gathering around Kauran Namoda and other student-populated off-campus communities.

3. We appeal for DSS to collaborate with other security agencies to ensure that the perpetrators of this crime are fished out and made to face the full wrath of the law.

We reminded the Service that Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution places the security and welfare of citizens as the primary purpose of government. Students are citizens. Students are the future. Their safety must be treated as a national emergency.

The DSS officials assured us of their commitment and that every necessary technical and operational step is being taken to secure the safe release of our students. We took that assurance seriously, but we will continue to monitor and follow up until our comrades return home safely.

NANS JCC Zamfara Axis will not rest, will not sleep, and will not be silent until our 6 students are released unharmed. We call on the Zamfara State Government under Dr. Dauda Lawal and the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to give DSS and all security agencies all the support they need for this rescue mission.

To the families: we stand with you. To the kidnapped students: hold on, your comrades are fighting for you.
