NANS, FRSC FORGE STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP ON ROAD SAFETY SENSITISATION, CRACKDOWN ON ABUSE OF NANS PLATE NUMBERS

I was on the team with the President of NANS, Comrade Akinteye Babatubde Afeez GCNS and other National Executives of NANS to a high-level strategic engagement with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), resulting in a far-reaching partnership on road safety advocacy and the regulation of NANS identification plate numbers nationwide.

The meeting, held earlier today at the FRSC National Headquarters, brought together critical stakeholders, who met with the Corps Marshal of FRSC, CM Shehu Mohammed, and other principal officers of the Corps.

Deliberations at the meeting centred on deepening institutional collaboration between both bodies in the interest of student welfare and national road safety. At the conclusion of the engagement, the following key resolutions were reached:

1. NANS and FRSC are to jointly float a massive nationwide road safety sensitisation campaign targeted at students and the general public.

2. NANS and FRSC agreed to a formal partnership to end the indiscriminate and unauthorised use of NANS plate numbers by persons not authorized or affiliated with the Association.

3. An official, FRSC-produced line of NANS embedded plates and accompanying documentation will be created, to guarantee authenticity and accountability going forward.

As part of the engagement, myself, the President of NANS and other National Executives embarked on an on-the-spot assessment of the FRSC’s 122 Emergency Call Centre, where we were briefed on the Corps’ rapid response infrastructure for road traffic emergencies nationwide. I also featured, albeit briefly, on FRSC Radio, where i addressed Nigerians directly on the importance of obeying road safety regulations and driving with care and diligence at all times.

Undoubtedly, I see this partnership as a landmark step in the relationship between Nigerian students and the FRSC, noting that it would not only restore integrity to the use of NANS identification but also position Nigerian students as active partners in promoting safer road use across the country.

I, one-half of the NANS Senate, commend the leadership of the FRSC for its openness to collaboration and reaffirm its commitment to working with relevant government agencies in the interest of Nigerian students and the Nigerian public.

GRASSROOT MEDICAL AWARENESS CAMPAIGN (GMAC) CELEBRATES WORLD SICKLE CELL DAY 2026

Today, June 19, the Grassroot Medical Awareness Campaign (GMAC) joins the global community in commemorating World Sickle Cell Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about Sickle Cell Disease (SCD), supporting individuals living with the condition, and advocating for improved healthcare access and equity.

This year's theme, "Closing the Survival Gap: Equity in Sickle Cell Disease," highlights the urgent need to ensure that every person living with sickle cell disease, regardless of their background or location, has access to quality healthcare, early diagnosis, effective treatment, and comprehensive support systems.

Sickle Cell Disease is an inherited blood disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. It causes red blood cells to become abnormally shaped, leading to severe pain episodes, anemia, infections, organ damage, and other serious health complications. Despite advances in medical care, many individuals still face challenges due to inadequate awareness, late diagnosis, and limited access to treatment.

GMAC encourages everyone to know their genotype, participate in genotype screening before marriage, support individuals living with sickle cell disease, and help spread accurate information about the condition. Increased awareness and early intervention can significantly improve the quality of life and life expectancy of those affected.

As we mark this important day, let us reaffirm our commitment to promoting health education, reducing stigma, supporting affected families, and advocating for policies that ensure equitable healthcare for all.

Together, we can close the survival gap and build a healthier future for individuals living with sickle cell disease.

Happy World Sickle Cell Day!
