Welcome to DES303: Introduction to Community Development

 A transformative exploration into the core of Community Engagement and Development. 


This course, consisting of ten units over four lecture weeks and eight weeks of practicum, is a required, 0-credit, one-semester undergraduate course for NOUN 300 level students. 


The course aims to equip students with the essential knowledge, practical skills, and ethical considerations needed to start, plan, and carry out effective community development projects. 


Learners will acquire a richer understanding of the diverse elements of Community Development through a mix of interactive learning and hands-on practicum, including its principles, methods, and the important role of Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) in Nigeria. 


DES303: Introduction to Community Development at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) aims to promote social responsibility, enhance societal well-being, and contribute to the nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 


This course guide provides you with a summary of the study and practice of Community Development, along with everything you need to do to complete and navigate the course and we encourage you to get the course guide and keep it handy for use.


Some general suggestions are offered for the amount of time to spend on each unit to successfully meet the course goals and objectives. 


This course equips learners with the following skills::


* Grasp and apply fundamental Concepts and Theories of Community Development in different settings. 


* Evaluate and tackle community needs using thorough assessment methods. 


* Create, plan, and execute effective Community Projects utilizing Participatory Approaches. 


* Monitor and assess community projects efficiently. 


* Investigate ethical considerations in Community Development, ensuring projects are inclusive, fair, and sustainable.

 

* Promote collaboration and involvement among community stakeholders, utilizing volunteerism and partnerships for broader societal impact. 


The main objectives?


* To offer a thorough understanding of Community Development, its significance to Nigerian society, and its connection to global and national Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 


* Equip students with practical skills to identify community needs, design projects, and implement effective solutions. 


* Encourage a spirit of social responsibility, collaboration, and patriotism among students, fostering active engagement in community development efforts. 


* Improve students’ problem-solving skills and critical thinking abilities, especially in resource-limited environments. 


* Promote a comprehensive understanding of ethical considerations in community development, ensuring respect for community values and fair participation. 


NOTE:


To successfully finish this course, you are required to engage actively with the study units, reference materials, and partake in at least one practical community development project. 


Each unit includes self-assessment exercises (SAEs) intended to evaluate your understanding. Participation in discussions, submission of assignments, and the final practicum are key components of this educational experience. 


This 15-week course requires commitment and active engagement to fully grasp the range of knowledge and skills presented.
